THESE PIECES BY RANSOM DESIGN EMANATE FROM A LIFELONG PRACTICE OF OBSERVATION AND ART.
John Phillips studied painting and sculpture at California College of the Arts as well as San Francisco Art Institute. He has produced and designed custom furniture and commissioned interiors in both New York City and the Bay Area. With Ransom Design, John is now refining his personal vision of luxurious function: creating furniture that reflects the past, has relevance now, with the quality of craft to become heirlooms for future generations.
The furniture has a clearly defined function. Each piece is handcrafted with an emphasis on natural, unadorned materials. The forms are simple and adapt to many collections and environments.
This furniture is a contemporary interpretation of traditional utility furniture, the simple chairs and tables found in old San Francisco kitchens that John grew up with. Those pieces were respected for their simple strength and form.
Here too, in these current forms, there is nothing extraneous.
The simplicity is immediately apparent. But a continued inspection reveals greater complexity, elegance, and a luxury created through respect of materials. Above all, there is the constant negotiation of function and esthetics.
John maintains a low-impact, made to order production in his Oakland studio using all domestic materials. Ash, walnut, maple, and oak are chosen for their beauty, strength and durability. Steel elements are used to provide sufficient strength to counter deflection to add years to the life of the furniture.
